Surreal Humor and the Absurdity of Love: Nihilistic Expressionism in Yuru Yuri
October 17th, 2012One of my favorite shows in the last few seasons is Yuru Yuri. I enjoyed it not only because it’s a funny and enjoyable comedy with a cast of cute girls, but because the show is surprisingly robust and works on many levels. While it appears to be another show about cute girls doing cute things, the [...]

Autumn 2014 Season Preview
August 24th, 2011Greetings, comrades! Today, while I was making some microwave popcorn while watching anime, I discovered the most peculiar behavior with my microwave. Instead of delicious popcorn, the bag I put in turned into green goo. Of course, I was really upset. That was my last popcorn ration this month. Since President Palin ordered the invasion [...]
Life and All Its Slices
June 29th, 2011Whenever I hear the words “slice of life”, I get hungry from some pie. When I first started watching anime, I was quickly exposed to the term. Throngs of slice of life titles are released each year, from School Rumble to Lucky Star, and people love them. So let’s break this curious phrase down, starting [...]

May 22nd, 2011Now that the crest of hype and excitement has passed, we can look with objectiveness back on Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Without a doubt, Puella Magi made a huge splash last season, and it was at any level the most talked about show. These phenomenal shows occur once every few seasons and completely polarize the [...]

April 13th, 2011Warning: Spoilars While I’m waiting for new episodes of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I went back to revisit some of the past episodes. When I rewatched episode 9, a particular scene struck me: the scene early in the episode when Kyuubey talks with Madoka in her room about the true nature of the puella magi [...]

Five Ridiculous Premises in Anime that are More Real than You Think
March 12th, 2010When Jules Verne wrote From the Earth to the Moon in 1865, people thought the idea was batshit nuts. A little more than 100 years later, NASA sent what was essentially a tin can with the processing power of a TI-83 full of humans to the moon and proved all those old dead French people [...]

Let’s Talk About… Magical Girl Transformations
February 26th, 2010If there’s one genre everyone knows about in anime, it’s magical girls. From Sailor Moon to Pretty Cure, magical girls are a genre that have come a long way (since 1966 actually). Everyone’s probably seen at least one or two of these shows, especially if you got Cartoon Network when you were a kid. Mahou [...]
The Genetics of Ahoges
February 5th, 2010You can’t claim you have watched any anime unless you have seen the ahoge (アホ毛) in action. The ahoge, of course, is the conspicuous lock of hair that protrudes from a character’s head. It can be from the bangs area or the top of the head. It’s usually depicted as a single hair but sometimes [...]
Who the Hell is Gustav Klimt and What does He Have to do with Anime?
January 27th, 2010Sora no Woto is a fun and interesting show that everyone is talking about this season. I particularly like the opening theme and the neat visuals that accompany. Sora no Woto is directed by painfully underrated director Kanbe Mamoru, who was also the director of Elfen Lied as well as episodes of Baccano!, Cardcaptor Sakura, [...]

Five Things I Will Miss About Endless Eight
August 12th, 2009As of the end of the ninth episode, it seems that the arc of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2, known as “Endless Eight” has finally come to an end. Five Reasons There Should be a Golf Anime
August 1st, 2009The ever popular anime which I fag about twice a week on this blog called Saki is not only action packed and wildly entertaining, it is also enlightening and recently opened up my mind. At first the premise seemed utterly ridiculous: Gonzo CG mahjong? Crazy over the top fight scenes? Girls and mahjong? It didn’t [...]
