Suisei no Gargantia Episode 3: Lost in Translation

I like Suisei no Gargantia. The thematic explorations are woven into character dialogue, and wrapped up in a fantasy setting. Scriptwriter Urobuchi Gen is not a particularly subtle composer. What I don’t understand is how people can love a show that feels so above average. The first episode of Suisei no Gargantia caught my eye in a heartbeat because it’s Urobuchi Gen in space, but now the most grandiose thing to happen is a bunch of Somalian pirates showing up.

I hated the preachy scene where Bellows goes back and forth with Led about justice or whenever it is that everyone is mad at Led about. It feels so much like an artificial way to introduce a conflict. I don’t feel any of the complexity that Psycho-pass emitted – Suisei no Gargantia feels elementry, almost gimmicky. Led is a bit of an asshole, Amy is dumb, and all the humans on the ship are lame as balls. When did this show become Turn A Gundam crossed with and the classic Kevin Costner film Waterworld?

Rackage. Now here’s a cool character. She even is rocking her harem swag.

EA CEO Larry Probst addresses the media

REDWOOD CITY — In light of Electronic Arts’ (NASDAQ: EA) purchase of Aniplex of America last month, fans of both Aniplex licensed shows and EA published games are coming to understand the the skepticism surrounding the video game publisher’s move to branch out into anime licensing.

Similar to PC game distribution policies from their Origin client, EA now requires all anime licensed by Aniplex to be watch though their always-online Hajimari client. Reactions are mixed, with some users praise Hajimari for having a more comprehensive library of anime than Netflix and allowing users to chose the Japanese voice track, while many vehemently berate the client’s problems with instability and slow updates.

“I just wanted to watch some Nisemonogatari, but then had to wait six hours for an update to finish,” says Hajimari user Imoutotalitarian, “For fuck’s sake, all it did was change the name of Attack on Titan!”

Additionally, EA made the controversial move of implementing downloadable content for Aniplex anime. Fans who are only now beginning to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann will have to buy and download the character Kamina to watch scenes in which he appears. In response to audience unrest that scenes of Fate/Zero were not true enough to the light novel, Hajimari users now have the opportunity to buy each of the Noble Phantasms that pierce Rider in the novel as DLC. Can we really say that Dokidoki’s Rikka episode wasn’t the best thing ever? It was the best thing ever. If you believe otherwise, you are a terrible, horrible person.

Justin (Lost My Thesis)

When my writer Usny told me he was going to write a first impressions post on Suisei no Gargantia, I responded “uhhh… sure have fun.” Being the boorish plebeian I am, I am only paying attention to shows full of kawaii girls. I passively checked the show out, and I felt it was fine. I look forward to an interesting show from Gen, but nothing to write home about yet. But damn you guys have seemed to take to it like a ring in a bell.

This is the first time that a studio has taken the top two spots of the APR since Week 11 of Summer 2011, when Brains Base finished atop with Mawaru Penguindrum and Natsume Yuujinchou San.  (more…)

This week, Lerxst and Usny join me in discussing why Kevo will not watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. In addition, we give a rundown on the first batch of new shows, including Shingeki no Kyoujin, Hataraku Maou-sama, Haiyore Nyaruko-san, and Suisei no Gargantia. There are a lot of shows this season, and there is a lot to like.

Suisei no Gargantia — First Impressions

Posted by Usny under Anime, Episodes
No Comments

A few weeks ago, I was supposedly on FAPcast to talk about previewing this season. Presumably because my internet eviscerated itself early in the recording process, I did not get the chance to talk about most of the shows I was looking forward to. If I had, you would have know that I was pretty hyped for Suisei no Gargantia. Here comes Urobuchi Gen, who has garnered my love with Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, and Psycho-Pass, and presents me with a show that is pretty much Macross Frontier meets Waterworld. I’m sold already.

Let’s talk about the space battle in the first half of the episode though. While it is your first indication that the show is utterly gorgeous, I thought the action itself was rather lackluster. Supposedly it’s a last push by all the forces the Galactic Alliance and the stakes are so high, they might as well be in Andromeda. I felt none of the urgency or tension that should have saturated the scenario, but that might just be because the director doesn’t have very much experience outside the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood movie (which I never saw). I’ll just chalk it up to the fact that our main character hella boring. I mean, he’s given the incentive that he can return to Avalon, the home ship, to sleep, eat, and reproduce while on leave and he doesn’t seem to care too much. Most soldiers are thrilled to go home, let alone have sex, what’s your damage?

Sex drivers come preloaded, broski

Sex drivers come preloaded, broski

The good thing is that this leaves quite a bit of room for character development, as it’s implied that the lieutenant has literally no life or experience outside of combat and training. In fact, it seems like he was born and bred just to fight since they mention at the beginning of the episode that he’s coming out of “sleep development time” and that he just gained the rights of a citizen. Either this is subtle world building or I’m just reading too far into shallow jargon.

WASHINGTON – After a heated and often rowdy round of oral arguments, the Supreme Court ruled today that Aku no Hana is terrible.

“It is the opinion of this Court that Aku no Hana blows. Respondent’s claims that the art style contributes to the show’s atmosphere or plot are unfounded and frankly, ridiculous,” read Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion.

In a landmark 7-2 decision, the Court found the first episode of the ZEXCS anime to be “awful”, referring to the show’s grotesque art style, jarring sound editing, and strange motifs.

“What the fuck is this bullshit?” Justice Scalia reacts to Aku no Hana

The case of In re ‘Aku no Hana’ has been controversial since its inception. After the first episode aired last Friday, angry fans around the country took to the streets to voice their outrage at the Japanese cartoon. The topic has deeply divided the nation ideologically, with one side claiming that the show is unique and interesting, and others decrying Aku no Hana as the worst thing to ever happen to anime. kevo (Desu ex Machina)

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a juggernaut. Not only did it take the top spot spot this week, but it shattered records with the awesome power of the Ripple. The series finale set the record for most first place votes in a given week for any show. It also recorded highest average ballot placement from a #1 ranked show (4.917 points per ballot) with 22 first place votes, 2 second place, and no third/fourth/fifth place votes — a record previously set by Girls und Panzer (4.684 points) last week. Roger Ebert: 1942 – 2013

Posted by kevo' under Editorials
[5] Comments

You may be wondering why you’re reading about a  film critic on an anime blog. Rather, you may be wondering why you’re reading about Roger Ebert at all. I was going to give my thoughts on Little Witch Academia today, but that can wait. Roger Ebert passed away today — a movie critic so successful his very name has become synonymous with criticism, a professional who became a big name in the movie industry despite never appearing in a film, the single biggest source of my writing inspiration.

I’ve been reading Roger Ebert since before I learned how to write an essay. It simply blew my young mind that this guy’s job was to write about what he thought about movies. The real poise and structure of his reviews were lost on me for many years. His distinctive style was a balance of sensual descriptions of how he felt about a scene with technical analysis of how a scene works. His praises translated his appreciation of the film into excitement and anticipation on your end, but he never came off as gushing. His critique bore the full schema of sarcasm and dry wit. He explored writing beyond the traditional essay, reviewing films in the format of letters or poems, and never shying away at an opportunity to squeeze a quick anecdote. Most importantly, he don’t give a fuck. He took ownership of his writing; they were his words, his ideas, his identity. He was proud of his work, and you could easily tell.
